The Portuguese Government expresses to the Government and People of Brazil its deep sorrow at the loss of the irretrievable historic and scientific collection of the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro following the fire that destroyed this emblematic building, itself an historical mark in the common History of Portugal and Brazil.

The Portuguese Government is entirely available to collaborate in the reconstruction of this important heritage, which belongs not just to Brazil but to the whole of Latin America and the world, in favor of present and future generations.

As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the acclamation of D. João VI – founder of the Royal Museum – and of the birth of Queen D. Maria II in the Palace of São Cristovão, which housed the National Museum of Brazil, this is a dramatic reminder of the centuries-old ties that bind our two countries, reflected even in tragic situations like the present.
