Welcome to this page of the Embassy of Portugal in Mexico, another instrument for us to keep in touch with our citizens, as well as with the friends of Portugal.
Portugal and México are going through a unique moment in their relationship, both on the economic and cultural spheres. The visit of His Excellency the President of the Republic on July 2017 was a moment that proved the excellence of our bilateral relations.
2018 is proving to be a unique year, as we face a big and exciting challenge: in November Portugal is the Guest of Honor at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the biggest literary event of the Spanish-speaking world, and which will bring to the Mexican state of Jalisco the literature of Portugal and much more.
We will certainly have much to share in this page, releasing information about our activities, in particular those connected to the Portuguese language and culture, announcing moments of economic promotion, or alerting to relevant news about Portugal.
Thank you for visiting us!
On May 21st in Mexico, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal, Teresa Ribeiro, and the Mexican Sub secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Julián Ventura, co-chaired a meeting for political consultations, where a balance was made of the bilateral relationship between the two countries in its different dimensions, debating issues of common interest of the regional and international agendas.
In the meeting, the two parties agreed to work for the increase of trade, tourism and investment flows. They reiterated the responsibility of both governments in the process of modernization of the Global Agreement of Mexico with the European Union. Mexico reaffirmed its commitment to work with Portugal for the success of the United Nations Conference on the Oceans, which will be held in Portugal in 2020.
The Portuguese Government is following with deep concern the unfolding of events in Venezuela, and the situation of the Portuguese and Portuguese-descendant community there, having taken adequate precautions regarding the protection of our fellow citizens.
The Portuguese Government urges Portuguese nationals to take the necessary safety precautions and to follow the advice and guidance provides by our Embassy and Consulates in Venezuela.
Portugal states its firm condemnation of repression and the use of violence against the Venezuelan civilian population and demands respect for fundamental rights and liberties as guaranteed by the Constitution of Venezuela.
The Portuguese Government further states its full condemnation of any foreign interventions in Venezuela that aim to artificially and against the will of the vast majority of the population impose a political situation that prevents the Venezuelan people from freely choosing their future.
The Portuguese Government reaffirms its support to the conduction of free, transparent and just presidential elections, reiterating its conviction that any solution for the ongoing Venezuelan crisis must be political, peaceful and democratic, and in full respect of the will of the Venezuelan people.
Portugal will continue to maintain, namely within the framework of the European Union and of the International Contact Group for Venezuela, a position of defense of a negotiated solution for the crisis that guarantees the opportunity for Venezuelans to express themselves freely regarding the route they wish their country to follow.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal will take part in the III Ministerial Meeting of the International Contact Group for Venezuela, to be held in San José, Costa Rica, on the 6th and 7th of May, where, together with its European, regional and international partners, the next steps towards the creation of the necessary conditions for the conduction of free and credible elections will be discussed.
